The Government & Cabinet

Lesson 123 · הַמֶּמְשָׁלָה

The PM, ~25 ministers, deputy ministers. The Cabinet (הַמֶּמְשָׁלָה) meets every Sunday morning at the PM\'s office. Ministers run ministries (מִשְׂרָדִים), control budgets, and answer to the Knesset. Knowing which minister handles what, Treasury, Defense, Interior, Education, Justice, lets you navigate any Israeli bureaucratic process.

Cultural note, Sunday morning Cabinet (יְשִׁיבַת הַמֶּמְשָׁלָה) is a media spectacle. PMs deliver "opening remarks" (דִּבְרֵי פְּתִיחָה) that drive the week\'s news cycle. The PM\'s residence on Balfour Street in Jerusalem became the focal point of the 2020-2021 protests. Kohelet Forum, Brothers in Arms, and other civil society orgs constantly engage with ministries.
