Israel\'s civil society is one of its densest in the world. ~40,000 registered nonprofits (עֲמוּתוֹת), strong unions, an aggressive press, an army of think tanks, and a culture of "every problem is an organization." From human rights groups to soldier-support groups, from Holocaust survivors to vegan associations, there\'s an org for everything. Knowing the major ones helps you read political news.
Cultural note, Israelis joke "two Jews, three opinions, four organizations", true at the institutional level. The Histadrut (national labor federation) was once so powerful it ran factories, banks, and HMOs. Today it\'s smaller but can still shut down the country with a general strike, as it tried during the 2023 reform crisis.
