The Israeli Economy: Structure

Lesson 131 · הַכַּלְכָּלָה הַיִּשְׂרְאֵלִית

Israel: ~$550B GDP, ~$53K per capita, OECD member since 2010. The economy is dual-track, a globally competitive high-tech sector and a high-cost-of-living domestic sector dominated by oligopolies. ~50% of exports are tech. The shekel (NIS) is freely convertible. Inflation, housing, the Sheqel-Dollar exchange rate, and the cost of bureka are all daily Israeli conversation topics.

Cultural note, Israelis discuss money openly. Salaries are gossip, not taboo. The standard question "כַּמָּה אַתָּה מַרְוִיחַ?" ("how much do you make?") is rude in Britain but normal in Israel. The number to know is "שָׂכָר מִינִימוּם", minimum wage (~5,300 NIS/month, late 2025), and "שָׂכָר חָדְשִׁי בַּמֶּמֶש", average monthly wage (~13,400 NIS).
