Tourism & Hospitality Industry

Lesson 137 · תַּיָּרוּת וְהַסְעָדָה

Pre-COVID Israel hosted ~4.5M tourists/year, ~$7B in revenue. Tourism is small in GDP terms (~2.5%) but large in employment. Hotels are concentrated in Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, the Dead Sea, Eilat. The hospitality sector, hotels (מָלוֹן), restaurants (מִסְעָדוֹת), cafés, employs many olim, students, and non-Israelis. Lessons 14, 79, 78 covered food and drink culture; this one covers the business side.

Cultural note, Tipping in Israel is 10% standard, 12-15% for good service. Tips are usually cash on top of card payment ("טִיפ בְּמִזְמָן", tip in cash). Many waiters work fully on tips; minimum wage compliance is often shaky in restaurants. Restaurant servers are heavily students (סְטוּדֶנְטִים), travelers (מְטַיְּלִים), and post-army backpackers.
