צַהַ"ל (Tzahal), Tzva HaHagana l\'Yisrael, Israel\'s Defense Forces. Established 1948. Three branches: ground (חֵיל יַבָּשָׁה), air (חֵיל אֲוִיר), navy (חֵיל הַיָּם). Plus intelligence, computing, medical, and special direction. ~170,000 active, ~465,000 reserves. Mandatory service: men 32 months, women 24 months. Lesson 71 covered the basics for olim; this block goes deep.
Cultural note, "צה"ל" is read aloud as "tzahal" (one word). Israelis under 50 served. The army is THE common shared experience that crosses all Israeli cleavages, religious, secular, Mizrahi, Ashkenazi, periphery, center. "אֵיפֹה שֵׁרַתָּ?", "Where did you serve?", is a mid-introduction question, never offensive.
