The Reserves: Miluim
Lesson 156 · מִלּוּאִים
Miluim, the reserves, are the IDF\'s defining structural feature. After 32 months of mandatory service, Israeli men remain in reserves up to age 40+ (combat) or 55 (non-combat). Annual call-up: 2-6 weeks. After Oct 7, 2023: 360,000 reservists called up, largest mobilization since Yom Kippur. The reserves are also a defining strain on Israeli families and businesses.
Cultural note, "צַו 8", Order 8, is the emergency call-up. Most Israelis never hear it; on Oct 7, 2023, every reservist did. The reserves bond is intense, small unit groups stay together for decades. The phrase "מִלּוּאִים, תּוֹדָה", "Miluim, thanks", is what you say to a reservist back from duty. Some people get reserve service as a badge; some as a burden. Both are true.
