Yiddish Loanwords in Modern Hebrew

Lesson 161 · שִׁכְבַת יִידִישׁ

Modern Hebrew was rebuilt on biblical bones, but its slang and emotional register are heavily Yiddish. Knowing the Yiddish layer means understanding the warmth, sarcasm, and irony Israelis carry with them, even those who never spoke a word of Yiddish at home. From Tel Aviv comedians to Knesset insults, Yiddish is the affective spine.

Cultural note, Yiddish was nearly killed twice: by the Holocaust (which murdered most native speakers) and by Ben-Gurion's policy of Hebrew-only nation-building. Yet Yiddish slipped back in through the window, first via Eastern European parents who couldn't fully shed it, then via comedy and affection. Today even Mizrahi Israelis use "balagan", "schlep", "chutzpah" without irony. It's no longer "Ashkenazi", it's Israeli.
