Mekorot & The National Water Carrier

Lesson 172 · מְקוֹרוֹת וְהַמּוֹבִיל הָאַרְצִי

Mekorot (מְקוֹרוֹת) is Israel's national water company, a state-owned giant managing 90% of the country's water supply. The National Water Carrier (הַמּוֹבִיל הָאַרְצִי) is the iconic 130km pipeline running from the Kinneret to the Negev, opened in 1964. This lesson covers Mekorot's vocabulary, the regulatory landscape (Reshut ha-Mayim), and the institutional Hebrew you'd hear in a job interview.

Cultural note, Mekorot is one of the four prestigious Israeli "tachshitim" (jewels, alongside El Al, Israel Aerospace, and Bezeq), large state companies that older Israelis associate with national pride. A job at Mekorot is highly desired: stable, technical, public-mission. The company employs ~2,500 and runs over 3,000 facilities. Knowing the institutional Hebrew is essential for any career path here.
