Wastewater & Sanitation

Lesson 174 · בִּיּוּב וְטִהוּר שׁוֹפְכִין

Israel recycles 90%+ of its sewage, the world record. The Shafdan plant outside Tel Aviv (one of the largest in the Middle East) treats and reuses Tel Aviv metropolitan wastewater for Negev agriculture. Treatment levels (primary, secondary, tertiary) and the reuse system are central to Israeli water security and agriculture.

Cultural note, In other countries, "treated wastewater for irrigation" sounds risky or unusual. In Israel it's normal, most farmers irrigate with it, the price is lower than fresh water, and decades of regulation make it safe. Learning to talk about wastewater calmly and technically (not euphemistically) is part of becoming "Israeli technical", there's no taboo here.
