Arabic Slang in Modern Hebrew

Lesson 185 · עַרְבִית-עִבְרִית

Modern Hebrew slang is heavily Arabic. Words like yalla, sababa, achbal, basta, achi, sahbak, ahla, used dozens of times daily by Israelis of all backgrounds. They came in via three streams: Mizrahi Jews from Arab countries, IDF Arabic-trained units, and daily contact with Arab neighbors. Mastering this layer is mastering everyday Israeli speech. This lesson is the single biggest unlock for sounding native.

Cultural note, Israelis don\'t think of these words as "Arabic" anymore, they\'re just Israeli. A Mizrahi grandmother in Sderot, an Ashkenazi tech founder in Tel Aviv, a Druze IDF officer all use the same slang. The classical Yiddish layer (oy vey, balagan) sits alongside Arabic (yalla, sababa) in modern speech. Together they make the unique Israeli Hebrew register.
