Reading Israeli Newspapers

Lesson 193 · עִתּוֹנוּת

Israeli newspapers, Haaretz (left-liberal), Yediot Ahronot (centrist mass-circulation), Israel Hayom (Netanyahu-aligned, free), Maariv, set the country's daily intellectual rhythm. Print is dying but online versions are essential reading. Headlines, op-eds, and feature articles use a register that sits between formal and conversational. Reading the news is the single best advanced-Hebrew exercise. After this lesson you can read any major Israeli paper.

Cultural note, Each paper has a distinct voice: Haaretz is ambitious and analytical (subscription-only), Yediot is "the people's paper" (mass), Israel Hayom is right-leaning and free (Sheldon Adelson-funded). The sections are universal: politics (politika), economy (kalkala), sports (sport), culture (tarbut), opinion (de'ot). Israeli journalists use heavy slang, Yiddishisms, and Hebrew puns, making reading them a vocabulary workout.
