Yeshivat Mercaz HaRav: The Flagship

Lesson 204 · יְשִׁיבַת מֶרְכָּז הָרַב

Mercaz HaRav is the flagship yeshiva of religious Zionism, founded in 1924 in Jerusalem by Rav Avraham Yitzchak HaKohen Kook. Located in the Geula/Beit Yisrael neighborhood, it has trained generations of religious-Zionist leaders, Yesha rabbis, and IDF chief rabbis. The yeshiva is known for its philosophical lineage: Rav Kook → his son Rav Tzvi Yehuda → Rav Avraham Shapira → Rav Yaakov Shapira (current rosh yeshiva). The 2008 terror attack, in which a gunman killed 8 talmidim in the beit midrash, is a recent scar on Israeli memory.

Cultural note, Mercaz HaRav has an outsized influence relative to its size (~500 talmidim). Many graduates went on to found their own yeshivot (Beit El, Mitzpe Ramon, Givat Shmuel), creating a "Kookist" school of thought distinct from the hesder mainstream. Some say "if you want to understand religious-Zionist ideology, read Rav Tzvi Yehuda\'s drashot from Mercaz." The yeshiva does not participate in hesder, the expectation is full Torah commitment, with later or shorter army service.
