Ariel: City and University

Lesson 206 · אֲרִיאֵל, עִיר וְאוּנִיבֶרְסִיטָה

Ariel is the largest Israeli urban community in Yesha, about 22,000 residents in central Samaria, founded in 1978 by Ron Nachman, who served as founding mayor for over 30 years. Demographically it is distinct from most settlements: heavily Russian-speaking olim and a strong French-speaking population, mixed religious-secular (datlash and chiloni majority), populated by workers and academics rather than ideologues. Ariel University, originally a college, gained full university status in 2012. The status remains controversial internationally but is recognized by the Council for Higher Education-Yehuda and Shomron.

Cultural note, Ariel feels like a working-class development town transposed into Samaria. Russian is heard as much as Hebrew at the supermarket; French as much as either in the cafes near the university. The Trans-Samaria highway (Maaleh Israel, kvish 5) connects Ariel directly to Petach Tikva and Tel Aviv, and many residents commute. The university has been BDS-targeted abroad but routinely admits around 17,000 students, including Arab Israelis. Ron Nachman\'s vision was a normal Israeli city, not a religious enclave.
