Prescriptions: Reading and Filling
Lesson 224 · מִרְשָׁמִים
Israeli prescriptions (mirsham) are mostly digital, issued by your doctor through the kupa system, automatically synced to participating pharmacies. Pick up at any kupa-affiliated pharmacy or partnered chain (Super-Pharm, Be Pharm). Generic medications are heavily subsidized; brand-name medications often require copay. The "Sal HaBriut" (basic medications basket) is updated annually by the Ministry of Health, what's in vs. out determines coverage.
Cultural note, The "Sal HaBriut update" each January is national news in Israel; patient advocacy groups lobby for new drugs to be included, and decisions can mean life-or-death for chronic conditions. As an oleh, your initial 6-12 months of subsidized coverage covers most basic medications, but specialty drugs (cancer, rare diseases) may need supplemental insurance. Israeli pharmacists (rokeach) are highly trained; they can answer detailed questions about interactions, dosage, alternatives.
