Beach Culture: Matkot, Surfing, Sea

Lesson 233 · תַּרְבּוּת הַחוֹף

Israel's 273 km of Mediterranean coast (plus Red Sea + Dead Sea) is the country's most-used recreation infrastructure. Matkot ("Israeli paddleball") is the unofficial national sport, bat-and-ball played on every beach. Beach culture: morning swimmers, midday families, evening volleyball + surfing. Tel Aviv beaches: Frishman, Gordon, Hilton (LGBTQ+ friendly), Banana Beach, Charles Clore. Surfing culture concentrated at Bat Yam, Hilton, Herzliya beaches.

Cultural note, Matkot is loud, slow, and persistent. The wooden "thwack" sound is the Israeli beach soundtrack. Beach hours: best 7-10am or 5-8pm; midday 11-3pm sun is brutal (~35°C in summer). Free public beaches everywhere; only Tel Aviv pay-per-visit beach is Gordon Pool. Most beaches have lifeguards (matzilim), changing rooms (chadrei halifa), showers (miklachat), kiosks (matnasit). Tel Aviv beach scene runs late, many people stay for sunset + dinner at Manta Ray or other beachfront restaurants.
