"Shirei Eretz Yisrael" (Songs of the Land of Israel) is the canonical pre-state and early-state Hebrew folk-song tradition, sung at every IDF ceremony, school, and cultural event. Composers include Naomi Shemer ("Yerushalayim shel Zahav", Jerusalem of Gold), David Zehavi, and Sasha Argov. Iconic singers: Shoshana Damari (1923-2006, Yemenite-rooted IDF entertainment), Yaffa Yarkoni, Ofra Haza (Yemenite-Mizrahi superstar, died 2000), Arik Einstein, Chava Alberstein. The tradition combines Mediterranean folk with biblical themes.
Cultural note, Knowing 5-10 Shirei Eretz Yisrael is cultural minimum. "Yerushalayim shel Zahav" (1967, Naomi Shemer) became Israel\'s unofficial second national anthem post-Six-Day War. Ofra Haza\'s "Im Nin\'alu" (1988) was the first Israeli song to chart globally, it opened the Mizrahi-Yemenite tradition to the world. Shoshana Damari\'s "Kalaniyot" (Anemones, an IDF Yom HaAtzma\'ut song) is universally known. These songs play at every Yom HaAtzma\'ut, Yom HaZikaron, and school ceremony.
