Chativat Beinayim: Middle School

Lesson 253 · חֲטִיבַת בֵּינַיִם

Chativat beinayim (literally "intermediate division") covers grades 7-9 (kita zayin, chet, tet), ages 12-15. It bridges elementary's gentleness to high school's rigor. Subjects expand: Tanach + Talmud (in religious schools), history, civics (ezrachut), geography, biology, chemistry, physics introduced grade 9. English deepens. Some schools combine 6-9 (k'vutza miuhedet); some are separate institutions. Honor classes (maslulim mehutaim) exist for advanced students.

Cultural note, Middle school is when Israeli adolescents start the long road to bagrut (matriculation). Tracking begins: students choose major academic emphasis (mada\'im / humanities / arts / mishpat). Bullying (bira\'ut), social media drama, and adolescent identity issues are present everywhere. Bnei Akiva, Hashomer Hatza\'ir, and other youth movements (tnu\'ot no\'ar) become central social anchors. School stops Friday at noon for shabbat. Late summer school year (ends ~end of June, restart ~end of August).
