Neighborhoods: TLV & Jerusalem Map

Lesson 265 · שְׁכוּנוֹת

Israeli cities organize into shchunot (neighborhoods) with distinct characters. Tel Aviv: Florentin (creative/young), North TLV (luxury), Old North (cafes/professional), Center (Rothschild + Sarona), South Tel Aviv (Neve Tzedek + Jaffa), Ramat Aviv (university). Jerusalem: Rehavia (secular professional), Talpiot (mixed), Baka (Anglo + dati), German Colony (Baka adjacent), Mea Shearim (haredi), Givat Mordechai (mixed), French Hill (mixed). Each has its own character, pricing, demographics.

Cultural note, Knowing the shchunot decides 80% of your Israeli daily life, neighbors, restaurants, commute, schools. Tel Aviv: Florentin = young/creative renters; North TLV = wealthy families; Center = professional 25-40s. Jerusalem: Rehavia = central, Anglo-friendly; Baka/German Colony = Anglo enclave; Mea Shearim = haredi only. As an oleh, visit 2-3 neighborhoods for a weekend before signing, neighborhood character matters more than apartment specifics.
