Latin American Jews: Aliyah from Argentina, Brazil, Mexico

Lesson 274 · יְהוּדִים מֵאָמֵרִיקָה הַלָטִינִית

Latin American Jewish community: ~400,000 across Argentina (~180K, largest), Brazil (~92K), Mexico (~40K), Venezuela (declining), Chile, Uruguay, Colombia. Mostly Ashkenazi (descended from European immigrants 1880-1939) with a Sephardi minority. Aliyah from LatAm runs ~1,500-3,000/year, surging during regional crises (Argentina 2001 financial collapse, Venezuela post-2010, Brazil 2014+). Hotspots in Israel: Tel Aviv, Hod HaSharon, Ra\'anana, Kfar Saba (Argentinian Spanish), Beit Shemesh.

Cultural note, Argentinian olim are the largest Latin American group, bringing tango, mate culture, asado (Argentine BBQ), and Buenos Aires-style cafe culture. Brazilian olim cluster in north Tel Aviv + Hod HaSharon. Mexican olim often work in Tel Aviv tech (engineers from UNAM). The "Avenida Argentina" in Hod HaSharon is a real local shorthand. LatAm olim integrate easily socially (warm Mediterranean vibe is similar) but often hit the Hebrew language barrier longer than Anglos. Recent trend: Venezuelan and Argentine economic refugees increase the flow.
