Operation Ezra and Nehemiah

Lesson 335 · מִבְצָע עֶזְרָא וּנְחֶמְיָה (1950-1952)

Between March 1950 and early 1952, roughly 120,000-130,000 Jews, almost the entire 2,600-year-old Iraqi Jewish community, were airlifted to Israel via Cyprus and Iran. The trigger was a denationalization decree (March 9, 1950) giving Iraqi Jews a 12-month window to leave permanently or stay forever. Then came the Tasqit (March 1951): a property freeze that stripped the departing community of bank accounts, businesses, real estate. Elite Baghdadi families, bankers, merchants, judges, doctors, landed at Lod airport and were bused to ma'abarot (tin-shack transit camps) in austere 1950s Israel. The cultural and economic shock was immense. They were dispersed to development towns: Or Yehuda, Ramat Gan, Bat Yam, Yehud, Petah Tikva, Ramla. The few thousand who stayed (~6K) gradually fled by the 1970s. This lesson gives you the Hebrew vocabulary to discuss this foundational event of Mizrahi Israeli identity.

Historical note, Operation Ezra and Nehemiah was named for the two biblical figures who led Jews back from Babylonian exile in the 5th century BCE, closing a 2,600-year arc. The operation was run by the Sokhnut (Jewish Agency) in coordination with the Iraqi government (which wanted the Jews gone but kept their assets) and Iran (which provided overflight rights via Tehran). Israel absorbed the equivalent of 10% of its 1950 population in under two years, in a country still rationing bread (Tzena austerity period 1949-1959). Most arrivals lost everything material but brought intact what mattered most: language (Judeo-Arabic), liturgy (Babylonian rite), and a thousand-year-old urban literacy that would reshape Israeli culture.

Historical Account: An Iraqi Olah Remembers

A composite testimony, the kind you'll hear from grandparents in Or Yehuda or Ramat Gan. The arc: Baghdad villa → 12-month decree → Tasqit freeze → Lod airport → ma'abara tin shack → eventual integration.
