The Iraqi-Israeli community produced an extraordinary density of public figures relative to its size, IDF Chiefs of Staff, Defense Ministers, Knesset speakers, novelists who reshaped Hebrew literature, musicians who carried Baghdadi maqam into the Israeli mainstream, and the activists who forced Israel to confront the erasure of Mizrahi history. This lesson is the who's-who: the names that come up in any serious conversation about Israeli politics, culture, or memory.
Cultural note, When an Ashkenazi Israeli mentions "Dado" without context, they mean David Elazar. When a Mizrahi family mentions "the al-Kuwaiti brothers", they mean the lost grandfathers of Israeli music. These names are shorthand for entire histories. Knowing them signals that you understand Israel beyond the postcard version.
