Notable Moroccan-Israeli Figures

Lesson 358 · דְּמוּיוֹת מָרוֹקָאִיּוֹת-יִשְׂרְאֵלִיּוֹת בּוֹלְטוֹת

Moroccan Jews shaped Israel beyond the kitchen and the Mimouna table. Politics, intelligence, finance, literature, mysticism, the bench is deep. This lesson surveys the names you will hear in the news, in conversation, in synagogue, in the bookshop. Knowing them is part of being a Moroccan-tradition oleh in 2026 Israel.

Cultural note, The Moroccan-Israeli political ascent is a 50-year story. From the demonstrations of the Wadi Salib (Haifa, 1959) and the Black Panthers (Jerusalem, 1971) protesting Ashkenazi-establishment discrimination, to David Levy entering the cabinet (1977), to Aryeh Deri reshaping Sephardi politics with Shas (1984+), the Moroccan community moved from periphery to center. Today a Moroccan-origin Knesset member is unremarkable. That normalization itself is the achievement.
