Block 38 Summary: Spanish/Ladino Jewry

Lesson 380 · סִכּוּם בְּלוֹק 38 · יַהֲדוּת סְפָרַד

Block 38 closed. From Obadiah 1:20 naming Sepharad to the Authoridad Nasionala del Ladino in Jerusalem, you traced 2,500 years of one of Judaism's two great civilizational arcs. The Visigothic kingdom, the Muslim conquest of 711, the Al-Andalus golden age (Hasdai Ibn Shaprut, Yehuda HaLevi, Maimonides in Cordoba), the 1391 massacres, the Conversos and Anusim, Torquemada and the Inquisition, the Alhambra Decree of March 31, 1492. Then the dispersion: Bayezid II's welcome, Salonika as "Mother of Israel," Tzfat as the kabbalistic capital, Don Yosef Nasi, Sabbatai Zvi. The Salonika Holocaust of 1943. Ladino as living tongue. Yitzhak Navon, the 5th President. This lesson consolidates Block 38 into one navigable sheet.

Cultural note, Sephardim are not "Jews from Spain", they are a civilization. Sepharadi halakha follows the Beit Yosef and Shulchan Aruch (Yosef Karo, Tzfat 1565). Sephardi liturgy (nusach Sefarad and nusach Edot HaMizrach) shapes prayer in much of Israel, France, Turkey, the Balkans, North Africa, and Latin America. Knowing this lineage is not optional in Israel, half the country lives it. After alyah, when you meet someone whose family came from Salonika, Izmir, Sarajevo, or Tetouan, you will already know the shape of their story.

Block 38 Reflection: One Civilization, Many Centuries

A short reflection on what this block has shown, the shape of Sephardic memory, why it matters in Israel today, and how it connects to the Ashkenazi arc you studied in earlier blocks.
