American Jewry is the largest diaspora community after Israel itself, roughly 6 million people, ~2% of the US population, but vastly overrepresented in politics, business, science, entertainment, and letters. This lesson surveys 50 notable figures across five domains. Knowing these names is part of cultural literacy for any oleh: most American olim arriving in Israel come with a mental map of who built what in 20th-century America.
Cultural note, American Jews split politically (~70% Democrat, but visible Republicans like Kissinger, Bloomberg-as-independent, Lieberman late-career). Three Supreme Court justices simultaneously (Ginsburg, Breyer, Kagan) was a 2010s peak. The cultural footprint, Spielberg, Streisand, Seinfeld, Dylan, Roth, is even larger than the political one. Many of these figures kept Yiddish-Ashkenazi identity strong; others (Ellison, Zuckerberg) are secular tech founders. The category "American Jew" covers vast religious, political, and cultural range.
US Politicians (Kissinger, Sanders)
Business & Tech (Zuckerberg, Bloomberg)
Entertainment (Streisand, Seinfeld)
Science & Medicine (Salk, Feynman)
Authors (Roth, Bellow, Singer)
The Cultural Footprint: A Short Reading
