Contemporary American Jewish Issues

Lesson 399 · יַהֲדוּת אָמֶרִיקָה בַּיָּמִים אֵלֶּה

American Jewry in 2026 is a community living through the sharpest pivot since the post-war era. The numbers tell part of the story: ADL recorded a 360% increase in antisemitic incidents in the year following October 7, 2023. Tree of Life Pittsburgh (2018, 11 dead), Poway (2019), Monsey Hanukkah stabbing (2019), JCC bomb threat waves, and a steady drumbeat of campus harassment have transformed how American Jews experience their own country. Synagogues now run armed security as a default. Day schools rehearse lockdowns. Star of David necklaces are tucked under shirts on the subway. At the same time, intermarriage rates sit near 58% in Reform/Conservative households (and barely 3% in Orthodox), Pew Research 2020 documented an accelerating split between religiously observant and culturally identified Jews, and a generational gap on Israel has widened from a fissure into a canyon. This lesson teaches the Hebrew you need to discuss all of this honestly.

Cultural note, The phrase American Jews use most often now is not "antisemitism" but "the situation" (ha-matzav), borrowed from Israeli usage. It captures something neither alarmist nor dismissive, a permanent low-grade alertness. October 7 is the dividing line. People speak of "before October 7" and "after October 7" the way an earlier generation spoke of "before the war" and "after the war." If you speak Hebrew with American olim or American Jewish visitors, this vocabulary will come up within the first ten minutes of any serious conversation.
