Tel Aviv Museum of Art

Lesson 435 · מוּזֵיאוֹן תֵּל-אָבִיב לְאָמָנוּת

The Tel Aviv Museum of Art (TAMA), founded in 1932 in Meir Dizengoff\'s home on Rothschild Boulevard, is the country\'s leading museum of modern and contemporary art. The Independence of Israel was declared in its old building on May 14, 1948. Today its main building on Sderot Sha\'ul HaMelech (1971) and the Herta and Paul Amir wing (Preston Scott Cohen, 2011) hold the country\'s strongest international modern collection (Klimt, Modigliani, Soutine, Pollock, Rothko) and the deepest Israeli contemporary collection.

Cultural note, TAMA is the museum of Tel Aviv\'s self-image: secular, modernist, internationalist, sharp-edged. Where the Israel Museum tells you about 5,000 years of land and people, TAMA tells you about 100 years of a city. The plaza outside became Hostage Square (Kikar HaChatufim) on October 7, 2023, and the museum has folded that civic role into its identity.
