Suzanne Dellal Center

Lesson 454 · מֶרְכַּז סוּזָן דֶּלָל

Suzanne Dellal Centre, opened in 1989 in Tel Aviv\'s Neve Tzedek neighbourhood, is the country\'s flagship dance house. It hosts Batsheva, the International Exposure festival, the Curtain Up festival, and dozens of resident and visiting troupes per year. The four halls (Yair Shapira, Inbal, Suzanne Dellal, and small studios) and the iconic orange-tree courtyard are the everyday geography of Israeli dance. This lesson covers the centre\'s founding, its halls, festivals, and how to read its programme.

Cultural note, The four orange trees in the courtyard reference the Jaffa orange industry that powered Neve Tzedek 100 years ago. The neighbourhood was Tel Aviv\'s very first (1887), predating the city itself by 22 years. Suzanne Dellal stands inside two restored 1908 school buildings; the dance centre was the catalyst for the gentrification of Neve Tzedek, which today has the most expensive real estate in central TLV.
