Dance Training & Academies

Lesson 458 · הַכְשָׁרָה לְמָחוֹל וַאֲקַדֶּמְיוֹת

Israeli dance training runs through three main academies: the Telma Yellin High School of the Arts (Givatayim), the Bat-Dor Studios (TLV), and the Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance. Above them sit the company training programmes (Batsheva Ensemble, KCDC International Dance Village). Add the after-school children\'s schools (Habama Studios, regional gan-machol classes), and you have the pipeline that produces the dancers seen at Suzanne Dellal. This lesson covers the schools, the audition process, the IDF dance soldiers programme, and what a serious training day looks like.

Cultural note, Telma Yellin is to Israeli dance what the Lycée Henri-IV is to French academia: get in at age 14, train 8 hours a day for 4 years, graduate ready for any company audition. Many Batsheva and KCDC dancers came through Telma Yellin or its smaller cousins (Hatzav, Reut). Then comes the IDF "outstanding artists" programme, gifted dancers can substitute regular military service for continuing performance commitments tied to public outreach.

A Telma Yellin Training Day

A short reading: a typical Wednesday at Telma Yellin for an 11th-grader on the dance major, schedule, technique class, repertoire rehearsal, academic load, and what dance students do that other students don\'t.
