The Jerusalem Theatre

Lesson 462 · תֵּיאַטְרוֹן יְרוּשָׁלַיִם

The Jerusalem Theatre, opened in 1971 in Talbiya, houses six halls under one roof, Sherover (auditorium), Henry Crown (recital), Rebecca Crown (chamber), Uzrad, Cinematheque hall, and the Khan in nearby Liberty Bell Park. It hosts the Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra (JSO), the Israel Festival, the Jerusalem Chamber Music Festival, and a steady programme of touring international ensembles. This lesson covers the building, the JSO, the chamber-music festival, and how Jerusalem\'s music week differs from Tel Aviv\'s.

Cultural note, Jerusalem\'s classical music scene is smaller and more politically heterogeneous than Tel Aviv\'s. The same hall hosts a Druze qanun ensemble on a Tuesday, a Schubert lieder recital on Thursday, and a Yiddish-cabaret programme on Saturday. The Jerusalem Chamber Music Festival in September is the country\'s most internationally respected chamber event; Elena Bashkirova (Daniel Barenboim\'s wife) directs it.
