Root י־שׁ־ב: dwelling

Roots Atlas 06 · שֹׁרֶשׁ י שׁ ב · the dwelling root
י שׁ ב
y · sh · v
everything to do with sitting, dwelling and settling
11 words · 1 root · 4 verb-voices

One body in one place: that is the whole idea of י־שׁ־ב. The simple verb is just to sit; but a person who sits stays, a person who stays lives somewhere, and a group that lives somewhere founds a town. So the same three letters slide from a chair, to a household, to a village, to a yeshiva, to a council meeting where everyone is literally seated. Watch the move: sitting becomes dwelling becomes settling the land. Every word here is verified against pealim, niqqud included.

The verb across the binyanim (voices)

The same root runs through the verb system. Each binyan is a voice: it bends the one idea into active, passive, causative or reciprocal. Tap to hear.

Pa'al
לָשֶׁבֶתlashevet
simple active, the plain action
to sit, to dwell, to settle
Pi'el
לְיַשֵּׁבleyashev
intensive / specialized active
to settle, to populate; to resolve (a dispute, a doubt)
Hif'il
לְהוֹשִׁיבlehoshiv
causative, make someone do it
to seat someone, to sit someone down
Hitpa'el
לְהִתְיַשֵּׁבlehityashev
reflexive / reciprocal, to / on oneself
to sit down; to settle, to take up residence

Notice the two-step ladder of agency. Pa'al = I sit. Hif'il = I make you sit (I seat you). Pi'el turns the staying into an action done to the land: settling it, populating it, and from there metaphorically settling a quarrel. The passives nif'al, pu'al and huf'al are not lexicalized as everyday verbs for this root, which is normal: not every root fills all seven binyanim.
