The Root System
Morphology 01 · שֹׁרֶשׁ
Hebrew is not a language you memorize word by word. It is a machine. Almost every word is built from a root (שֹׁרֶשׁ, shoresh), usually three consonants that carry the core meaning, poured into a pattern (a fixed mould of vowels and prefixes). The root gives the meaning; the pattern gives the part of speech and the nuance. Learn the moulds and one root unlocks a dozen words at once. This track teaches you to decode and derive, so a word you have never seen is rarely a closed door.
The method of this whole track, Every concept comes in three moves. 1. Decompose the word (prefix / root / pattern / suffix). 2. Isolate the pattern, the generative mould. 3. Snowball, three or four more words on the same mould, so you feel dozens unlock at once. The trigger for this whole idea was one word: בְּהַצְלָחָה (b'hatzlacha, "good luck") = preposition בְּ + the noun הַצְלָחָה (success), itself the hif'il action-noun mould הַ_ָ_ָה on the root צ-ל-ח. We unpack that fully in M4.
Anatomy of a root: כ־ת־ב (k-t-v = "writing")
Three consonants. Everything about writing comes from them. The vowels and affixes change; the three letters stay.
כָּתַב←כ ת ב+_ָ_ַ_
root k-t-v + the pa'al past mould → katav = "he wrote". The plainest verb.
מִכְתָּב←כ ת ב+מִ_ְ_ָָ
same root + the מ noun mould (often "the result / the thing") → mikhtav = "a letter" (the written thing).
הַכְתָּבָה←כ ת ב+הַ_ְ_ָָה
same root + the hif'il action-noun mould → hakhtava = "dictation" (causing writing). Recognize the mould? It is the בהצלחה family.
The full כ־ת־ב family
One root, eleven words. Tap any to hear it. None of these were memorized separately, they were derived.
Root family: ל־מ־ד (learning / teaching)
Root family: ש־מ־ר (guarding / keeping)
Root family: א־כ־ל (eating)
Decode drill: find the root
Strip the prefixes, suffixes and vowels. What three consonants are left? That is the root, and the meaning lives there.
