One motion drives this root: rolling. Roll something flat and it becomes a scroll; roll it round and it becomes a cylinder, a wheel, a pill; let the sea roll and you get a wave. It is a geminate root (the ל doubles), close cousin to ג־ל־ה above, and it even gives the word גַּלְגַּל, a wheel, by rolling the whole root over itself. Every word here is verified against pealim, niqqud included.
The same root runs through the verb system. Each binyan is a voice: it bends the one idea into active, passive, causative or reciprocal. Tap to hear.
Only the pa'al is in common lexical use, carrying the plain physical act of rolling or wrapping. The rest of the family lives in the nouns, where the rolling motion has frozen into objects: scroll, cylinder, wave, pill.
Same root letters, different noun moulds (mishkalim). The mould tells you the function: who does it, the act of doing it, or the thing produced.
Strip the prefixes, suffixes and vowels. Three consonants remain, and the meaning lives there.
