Root ר־פ־א: healing

Roots Atlas 207 · שֹׁרֶשׁ ר פ א · the healing root
ר פ א
r · f · '
everything to do with healing, the doctor, medicine
6 words · 1 root · 2 verb-voices

Three consonants carry one idea: to heal. From this single verb Hebrew builds the doctor who heals, the discipline of medicine, the remedy in the bottle, and the clinic where the healing happens. Even the name Refael means "God heals". Every word here is verified against pealim, niqqud included.

The verb across the binyanim (voices)

The same root runs through the verb system. Each binyan is a voice: it bends the one idea into active, passive, causative or reciprocal. Tap to hear.

The plain pa'al לִרְפֹּא survives mainly in literary and biblical registers; in modern speech the pi'el לְרַפֵּא does the everyday work of "to cure". The agent of the pi'el is the רוֹפֵא, the doctor, listed below.
