Root א־ב־ב: budding, springtime

Roots Atlas 212 · שֹׁרֶשׁ א ב ב · the budding-and-spring root
א ב ב
' · v · v
everything to do with buds and the spring
3 words · 1 root · 0 verb-voices

This is a small, tightly focused root: the bud, the first green shoot, and the season it announces. From the literary noun for a sprouting bud comes Aviv, spring itself, and the adjective spring-like. The same word lives on every Israeli map: Tel Aviv is the "hill of spring". A geminate-flavoured root with a doubled ב, it is naturally thin, no full verb conjugation, just a cluster of names for renewal. Every word here is verified against pealim, niqqud included.

This root carries no living verb. With a doubled final ב it never developed a full binyan conjugation in modern Hebrew; the idea of budding lives entirely in nouns and an adjective. A noun-only root is perfectly normal: not every root becomes a verb.
