Root ס־י־ר: patrol, tour, remove

Roots Atlas 219 · שֹׁרֶשׁ ס י ר · the patrol-and-remove root
ס י ר
s · y · r
everything to do with going round to scout and with taking away
5 words · 1 root · 2 verb-voices

These three letters carry two distinct strands that share a spelling. One strand is going round: to tour, to patrol, to scout, giving the patrol unit and the reconnaissance tour. The other strand is taking away: the hif'il "to remove" and its action-noun "removal". Modern Hebrew keeps both live, so the page is split by sense, not forced into one meaning. Every word here is verified against pealim, niqqud included.

The verb across the binyanim (voices)

The same root runs through the verb system. Each binyan is a voice: it bends the one idea into active, passive, causative or reciprocal. Tap to hear.

Pi'el
לְסַיֵּרlesayer
intensive / specialized active
to tour, to patrol, to scout
Hif'il
לְהָסִירlehasir
causative, make someone do it
to remove, to take off, to revoke

The two verbs belong to the two senses: the pi'el לְסַיֵּר is the "go round / patrol" strand, while the hif'il לְהָסִיר is the "take away" strand (a hollow ס-ו-ר verb). They share the consonantal skeleton but not the meaning, so the nouns below group under whichever sense they serve.

Words born from the root
