Root ח־ל־ב: milk

Roots Atlas 232 · שֹׁרֶשׁ ח ל ב · the milk root
ח ל ב
ch · l · v
everything to do with milk and dairy
4 words · 1 root · 1 verb-voices

One concrete root: milk. You milk an animal with the verb, you drink the milk it gives, and you label food dairy with the adjective, a distinction that matters daily in a kosher kitchen. The same letters even name the protein, the milky-white substance, and the egg white. The family is small and very physical. Every word here is verified against pealim, niqqud included.

The verb across the binyanim (voices)

The same root runs through the verb system. Each binyan is a voice: it bends the one idea into active, passive, causative or reciprocal. Tap to hear.

Pa'al
לַחְלֹבlachlov
simple active, the plain action
to milk (an animal)

Just one everyday verb, the pa'al "to milk", because this root is mostly about the substance, not actions done to it. The other binyanim are not lexicalized for ח־ל־ב; a small concrete root often lives through its nouns more than its verbs.
