IDF Training: Tironut to Officer

Lesson 153 · טִירוֹנוּת

Every Israeli soldier starts with טִירוֹנוּת, basic training. Combat soldiers do tironut for 4 months at one of three bases (Mahane Tzeelim, BaHaD 4, or specific unit base). Then advanced training (אִמּוּן מִתְקַדֵּם), 4 more months. Then squad leader (מַ"כ) course (3 months). Then maybe officer school (BaHaD 1), 6 months. The training Hebrew is its own register.

Cultural note, "מַסָּע כּוּמְתָּה", the beret march, is the climax of basic training. 50-90 km, depending on unit. Family meets the soldier at the end. The beret is awarded under Israeli flag, often at a meaningful site (Western Wall, Masada, Latrun). The phrase "סוֹף מַסָּע", "end of march", is shorthand for "I made it through."

Tironut First-Day Speech (the commander)

A typical opening speech the commander gives new draftees on their first day at basic training. The structure repeats across units.

Calling Home From Base

A Friday afternoon phone call home from base, the universal soldier-to-mom dialogue. Notice how Israelis pack a week\'s news into 5 minutes.
