Water Cycle & Sources of Israel

Lesson 171 · מַחֲזוֹר הַמַּיִם בְּיִשְׂרָאֵל

Water in Israel is sacred, economically, politically, technically. The country sits in a semi-arid zone with shrinking aquifers and a Kinneret that has dropped meters in 50 years. Understanding the water cycle in Hebrew is foundational for any work in agriculture, Mekorot employment, or simply understanding the news. This lesson covers natural sources, hydrologic vocabulary, and the basic geography of Israeli water.

Cultural note, Israel turned a water-scarce country into a water-exporting country in 30 years. The vocabulary reflects this: "מַיִם" (water) is everywhere, in songs, in idioms ("חוֹסֵךְ מַיִם" = saves water = thrifty), in politics (water rights with Jordan, Lebanon, Palestinians).
