VCs: Israel's Venture Capital Ecosystem

Lesson 212 · קְרָנוֹת הוֹן סִיכּוּן

Israel's venture capital ecosystem began with Yozma 1993, a government-funded matched VC fund that seeded the first 10 Israeli VCs. Today ~$15-25B in annual VC investment flows into Israel, second-highest per-capita globally. Major Israeli VCs include Pitango, Vintage, Vertex, Aleph, Glilot, and Jerusalem Venture Partners (JVP). Major US VCs with Israeli offices: Sequoia, Battery, Lightspeed, Bessemer, Insight. The Tel Aviv VC scene is concentrated in Sarona, Rothschild Boulevard, and Gibor Sport.

Cultural note, Pitching in Israeli VC culture requires a specific posture: extreme directness ("just tell me the unit economics"), tolerance for interruption, willingness to pivot mid-pitch. Israeli founders typically take less ceremony than American counterparts, a "30-minute slot" often means "we get to it in 5 minutes." Lehavin et ha-deal (understanding the deal) requires fluency in cap tables, dilution, liquidation preferences. The vocabulary mixes English and Hebrew freely.
