Mobileye: From Hebrew University to Intel and IPO

Lesson 213 · מוֹבִּילְאַי

Mobileye was founded in 1999 by Amnon Shashua, a computer science professor at Hebrew University, and Ziv Aviram. The company builds camera-based ADAS (advanced driver-assistance systems) and autonomous-driving technology. It IPO'd on the NYSE in 2014, was acquired by Intel in 2017 for $15.3B (the largest Israeli tech exit in history at the time), and was spun out and re-IPO'd on Nasdaq in 2022 at a $17B valuation. Headquarters: Har Hotzvim, Jerusalem.

Cultural note, Mobileye is the textbook case of academic-to-industry transition: Shashua\'s vision research at Hebrew University became the technology stack. ~2000 employees in Israel, ~3500 globally. Most ADAS systems on Audi, BMW, Volkswagen, Volvo (~125 OEMs) use Mobileye chips. Israeli engineers describe Mobileye as "the biggest place to do real computer vision research outside of Google or Apple." After the 2022 re-IPO, Intel still holds a majority but Mobileye trades independently on Nasdaq.
