Wix: Drag-and-Drop Empire from Tel Aviv

Lesson 214 · וִיקְס

Wix.com was founded in 2006 by Avishai Abrahami (CEO), his brother Nadav Abrahami, and Giora Kaplan. The product is a drag-and-drop website builder on a freemium model, listed on Nasdaq in 2013 in a $600M IPO. Today Wix has roughly 270M users globally, around $1.5B in annual revenue, and ~5500 employees (~3500 of them in Israel). Headquarters sit in Tel Aviv near the harbor, Wix is the textbook case of an Israeli SaaS company scaling globally, with most of its users being American small businesses, not Israelis.

Cultural note, Wix represents the "global SaaS" path versus the more common Israeli "exit-and-restart" path: Wix never sold, kept growing publicly, and became one of Israel\'s largest tech employers. The Tel Aviv HQ is a campus near Tel Aviv Port (Namel) and is a destination tour stop for visiting tech delegations. Avishai Abrahami remains CEO 18+ years after founding, which is unusual in Israeli tech. The product line spans the website builder, e-commerce, Wix Restaurants, and CRM. Marketing strategy famously includes Super Bowl ads featuring celebrities (Christoph Waltz, Heidi Klum, Helen Mirren), almost unheard of for an Israeli company.
