Ulpan: Hebrew Language School
Lesson 256 · אוּלְפָּן
Ulpan is Israel's intensive Hebrew-as-second-language school system, primarily for olim (immigrants). It was founded in 1949 to teach incoming immigrants the language as quickly as possible. There are 5 main levels: Aleph (A1 starter), Bet (A2 intermediate), Gimel (B1 advanced beginner), Dalet (B2 intermediate-advanced), Hey (C1 advanced). A standard course runs about 5 hours/day, 5 days/week, for 5 months, roughly 500 hours total. Ulpan is free for olim chadashim through Misrad HaKlita (the Aliyah Ministry). The main network includes Ulpan Etzion (Jerusalem), Ulpan Akiva (Netanya), Ulpan Ezrachi (Tel Aviv), kibbutz ulpanim, and Hebrew University Beit Ulpan.
Cultural note, Ulpan culture varies wildly: Ulpan Etzion is Anglo/professional-friendly, Ulpan Akiva is global-tourist-immersion, kibbutz ulpan combines Hebrew with farm work and community life. The "ulpan family", fellow students from 50+ countries, often becomes a lifelong network. Most olim attempt to clear Aleph + Bet (about 1 year). Reaching Dalet/Hey level typically requires 2-3+ years and additional self-study. As of 2024, supplementary online ulpan options grew (Rosen School of Hebrew, Italki). Recent trend: many olim do hybrid, in-person ulpan + online tutors.
