Universities: The Israeli Higher Education Map

Lesson 258 · אוּנִיבֶרְסִיטָאוֹת

Israel has 9 research universities plus around 50 academic colleges. The 9 universities are: Hebrew University (Yerushalayim), Tel Aviv University (Tel Aviv), Technion (Haifa, engineering), Ben-Gurion University (Be\'er Sheva), Bar-Ilan (Ramat Gan, religious), Haifa University (Haifa), Weizmann Institute (Rehovot, science research), Ariel University (Ariel, recently elevated 2012), and the Open University (distance). A bachelor\'s degree (BA/BSc) takes 3-4 years. Tuition is around 10K NIS per year, subsidized for citizens.

Cultural note, The "Big 4" research universities are: Hebrew University (humanities + sciences), Tel Aviv University (largest, broadest), Technion (engineering specialty), and the Weizmann Institute (PhD-only, world-class research). Bar-Ilan is the religious-Zionist academic flagship. Most degrees are taught in Hebrew, though some English-language masters are available. Israeli students typically start university at 21-22 after IDF service and finish at 25-27, the late start makes Israeli students more mature than their Western counterparts. Tuition is around 10K NIS subsidized by the state, around 30K NIS for foreign students.
