Arnona: Municipal Property Tax
Lesson 267 · אַרְנוֹנָה
Arnona is Israel's municipal property tax, paid bimonthly to the iriya (municipality). Calculated by apartment size and zone (mehoz) within the city, rates range roughly 30-100 NIS per square meter per year. Tel Aviv runs ~80-100 NIS/sqm, Jerusalem ~60-80, periphery cities ~30-50. Arnona pays for schools, parks, garbage, libraries, parking enforcement, and the fire department. Discounts exist for olim chadashim (90% reduction first year, scaling), seniors (gimla), military reservists (miluim), single parents, and low-income households.
Cultural note, Arnona is everyone\'s annoyance. The tashlum (payment) arrives bimonthly via mail or app. As an oleh chadash, applying for the immigrant discount via your iriya is essential, it saves 80-90% in the first year. The gimla discount for seniors over 65 is automatic in some iriyot, others require application. If you sublet your apartment, the tenant typically pays arnona (per contract). Disputes over arnona apartment classification go to the iriya appeals committee. Major iriya websites: Tel Aviv (tel-aviv.gov.il), Jerusalem (jerusalem.gov.il).
