Legal Hebrew Basics: Contracts, Courts, Rights

Lesson 295 · עִבְרִית מִשְׁפָּטִית

Legal Hebrew is the most archaic register, full of Aramaic, Mishnaic Hebrew, and 19th-century terminology. At B2 you can read a rental contract, employment agreement, or court summons; identify the parties, obligations, terms, and termination clauses. You don't need to draft contracts (use a lawyer), but you must understand what you're signing. Israel\'s legal system: secular civil + religious courts (Rabbinical, Sharia, Druze, Christian) for personal status.

Cultural note, Hebrew legal vocabulary draws heavily from Talmudic Aramaic ("dina d\'malchuta dina", the law of the kingdom is law) and modern Hebrew statutory terms. Always read the small print ("האותיות הקטנות"), look for cancellation clauses ("ביטול"), payment terms ("תשלומים"), and obligations ("התחייבויות"). Use a lawyer (orech din) for major contracts. Small claims court (m\'shpat ktanim) handles disputes up to ~33K NIS without a lawyer.
