Israeli sculpture lives outdoors. From Avraham Melnikov\'s 1934 lion of Tel Hai to Yitzhak Danziger\'s 1939 Nimrod, from Dani Karavan\'s land-art White Square in Tel Aviv to Menashe Kadishman\'s ironwork sheep, much of the canon is built into city plazas, kibbutz hillsides, and university quads. This lesson covers the founders, the major figures, the public art tradition, and the canonical works you can visit on a long weekend.
Cultural note, In Israel, "kikar" (square) and "rechovah" (plaza) almost always carry a sculpture. Public art is part of how the country narrates itself, Holocaust memorial in every town, Yitzhak Rabin Square sculpture in Tel Aviv, Karavan\'s underground installation in the desert near Sde Boker. Walking past them without seeing them is missing the visual layer of national life.
