The Israel Museum, Jerusalem

Lesson 434 · מוּזֵיאוֹן יִשְׂרָאֵל, יְרוּשָׁלַיִם

The Israel Museum, founded in 1965 in Jerusalem\'s Givat Ram, is the country\'s national museum and one of the great encyclopedic museums of the Middle East. It holds the Dead Sea Scrolls in the Shrine of the Book, a 1:50 model of Second Temple Jerusalem, the Billy Rose Sculpture Garden by Isamu Noguchi, the largest archaeological wing of any museum in Israel, and a strong Judaica & Jewish Art collection. This lesson covers the layout, key wings, signature works, and the vocabulary you need to navigate.

Cultural note, Walking the Israel Museum on a single afternoon is impossible. Locals plan one wing at a time: archaeology one day, Judaica another, fine art a third. Free entry on Tuesday afternoons used to be a thing; check the current schedule. The Shrine of the Book\'s white dome and black wall are themselves a sculptural manifesto on the Dead Sea Scrolls, light vs darkness, Sons of Light vs Sons of Darkness, in the architecture itself.
