Classical ballet in Israel runs through three currents: the Israel Ballet (founded 1968 by Berta Yampolsky and Hillel Markman, today the country\'s only resident classical company); the wave of Soviet-trained dancers who arrived after 1990 and reshaped Israeli technique; and the dance academies (Telma Yellin, Bat-Dor, Jerusalem Academy) that train the local pool. This lesson covers the founding, the Soviet impact, the major choreographers, and the canonical productions that recur on Israeli stages.
Cultural note, Classical ballet in Israel sits in tension with Naharin-led contemporary dance: the Israel Ballet does Swan Lake and Coppélia at the Mann Auditorium with Tel Aviv\'s opera orchestra, while Suzanne Dellal does Decadance. Most serious Israeli dancers train in classical first, then move into contemporary or Gaga. The Soviet aliyah of the 1990s was the largest single ballet-talent transfer in modern history, and you can still see its imprint on Israeli technique.

An Audition at the Israel Ballet
A short reading: a typical audition day at the Israel Ballet, barre, centre, variation, jury comments, what the candidate hears, what the panel decides, how the language flows in three accents (Hebrew, Russian, English).
