The Barby & Rock Venues

Lesson 464 · בָּארְבִּי וְמוֹעֲדוֹנֵי הָרוֹק

The Barby Club, opened in 1992 in southern Tel Aviv on Kibbutz Galuyot Road, is the country\'s most legendary mid-size rock venue, capacity 800, no seats, sweat on the walls. Almost every important Israeli rock band has played there: Mashina, HaYehudim, Aviv Geffen, Knesiyat HaSekhel, Berry Sakharof, Asaf Avidan. Beside it sit Zappa Club (since 2002, two halls in TLV + Jerusalem), Hangar 11 at Tel Aviv Port, and the smaller Beit HaAmudim Lounge. This lesson covers the venues, the audience, the bouncer-and-bar lingo, and the sound-engineer working language.

Cultural note, A Barby concert starts late. Doors at 21:00 means support at 22:30, headliner at 23:30, end past 1 a.m. Most under-25 Israelis know the entire Mashina catalogue from sing-along nights. The crowd dress code is "black T-shirt + ripped jeans", leave your kippa and your suit elsewhere. Smoking outside is the norm; the alley behind the Barby is its own social institution.
